What is Zouk (the dance)

Here is a short text intro (based on Wikipedia). Below in the next post there are videos of regular zouk dancing - a few examples of dancing zouk to get a taste of it.

Zouk was first developed in Rio de Janeiro. It is danced in Brazil (Rio and Brasilia), Australia, The Netherlands, Spain and spreading across other European countries. It uses a modified, slower, smoother, even more sensual version of the old lambada and is typically danced on Zouk style music.

Unlike salsa, which is led with the hands; Brazilian zouk is led by more parts of the body, noticeably the glued-to-each-other hips of the partners or other connection points. Thus, in a basic sideways movement, followed by the rest of the body, and this is part of what makes the dance so sensual. However, in various moves the dance partners are also connected by eye contact, legs, arms, shoulders, head, etc.

Variety of styles - what zouk dancing may look like

These are just a few videos showing what Zouk may look like, however the best thing about Zouk, at least as I take it, is that it can be a base for a completely free-form partner dance providing plenty of space for developing creativity, expression and also body- and partnering skills-training, whatever other dance styles you do or want to develop.
